The work below has appeared in publications and award programs that take residential architecture seriously. Each feature represents a specific project, a specific client, and a specific moment in the practice. Recognition is not the goal of the work — but when it comes, it's worth marking.
PRACTICE AT A GLANCE
2017 · Founded
40+ · Completed commissions
5 · Licensed states
Principal-led atelier · No associate handoff
ABOUT THE PRACTICE
James Phillip Golden, AIA, is the principal of James Phillip Golden Architect, an atelier practice based in Osterville, Massachusetts, working in custom residential architecture across Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Block Island, and coastal Rhode Island.
Trained for fifteen years at Patrick Ahearn Architect, Golden founded the practice in 2017 around a single principle: the architect responsible for a project should be present for every part of it. More than forty commissions later, the model has not changed. Every design decision, every site visit, and every conversation with the contractor that matters runs through the principal.
Golden holds a Master of Architecture with a focus on historic preservation, including graduate fieldwork in Corinth and Athens. He is licensed in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and Maine, and is NCARB certified.

PRINCIPAL
JAMES PHILLIP GOLDEN, AIA
Founder & Principal Architect
James Phillip Golden, AIA, founded James Phillip Golden Architect in 2017 after fifteen years as an associate at Patrick Ahearn Architect, where he led the firm’s most demanding residential commissions. He holds a Master of Architecture from the Boston Architectural College with a focus on historic preservation, including graduate fieldwork in Corinth and Athens studying classical building forms.
His practice is built around a single conviction: that the architect responsible for a residential commission should be present at every stage of it. More than forty completed projects later, the model has not changed. Golden is licensed in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and Maine, NCARB certified, and serves as Department Chair of Architecture at the New England Institute of Technology. He works from Osterville on Cape Cod and lives in Rhode Island with his family.
